2011 Reading List

My goal this year is 50 books. Right now I'm just about on track or a little ahead of that. I'll bring you along the journey of the books I read. If you're interested in any, just click on the title and it will take you to the Amazon.com page for that book. And, please leave suggestions if you have some!

8. The Knight by Steven James - James has quickly become one of my favorite authors and this book continued to highlight that fact. Fast-paced, but character-driven, James tells an awesome story. I hope to someday write half as good as him. This is the third book of his series following FBI special agent Dr. Patrick Bowers. You won't regret this, unless you pick it up when you really have pressing things to accomplish.

"Death isn't trite because life isn't."
"Justice isn't served when truth is censored."

7. Crazy Love by Francis Chan - This was a good book for me to reevaluate my love for God and those around me and how that is actually lived out. What does it really mean to love God and be a disciple of His? If you claim to be a Christian, this book will challenge you to actually live in love with God.

6. The Justice Game by Randy Singer - This was a really intriguing and thought-provoking book. The author writes a very good story about the issue of gun control and the 2nd Amendment. The author's family has lived through the ordeal of a shooter in their child's school which resulted in the death of a teacher. This book stems from that experience, and Singer left his conclusion at the end of the book up to  potential readers. Throughout the book, Singer had me questioning my own philosophy on the issue, and even now I am working through my thoughts. Very good book, especially if you like anything to do with legal fiction.

5. See Me After Class by Roxanna Elden - This was an amazing book! I loved it the entire way through. It is written for fairly new teachers, and being halfway through my first year, I found myself just laughing at most parts of the book as I realized that was me exactly. There are very helpful tips and strategies in this book, but it is written from a very humble and human teacher who is willing to admit her mistakes and how she was able to get past her obstacles. Definitely a good book for any rookie teacher.
"Dummies shouldn't be teachers. As a country, we need educators who have brains, dedication, enthusiasm, and common sense."
4. Watchlist by a Jeffrey Deaver and others - So . . . it was a really good idea to get together with a bunch of thriller writers and each write a chapter to be able to complete a whole book. But, after that idea, it got a little drawn out. Imagine a bunch of legitimately really good writers being given only a chapter to express themselves. There ended up being a lot of extra details, too much knowledge and it slowed down the pace of a thriller. The stories were good, and it was interesting to change writers every chapter, but not a favorite this year.
"A sense of justice and a blush of optimism raised by an unexpected success were illusions, no more reliable than a promise or a kiss."

3. Return by Karen Kingsbury and Gary Smalley - This is the third book in the series following Remember. I enjoyed how the authors kept with the same family and continued to develop themes throughout the series that all centered around looking to the Creator for the ultimate answers.

2. Remember by Karen Kingsbury and Gary Smalley -
I have really enjoyed the books I have read in this series so far. Kingsbury and Smalley do a good job of writing in situations that force people to look for help from somewhere else.

1. The Rook by Steven James - This is an amazing book! I loved it. I couldn't put it down. It is the first in a series about an FBI agent who is one of the leading specialists on a new form of FBI criminal tracking. James does an awesome job of developing characters and getting you to have a connection with one of the primary characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the relationships written into the book. They were not overdone, but definitely thorough enough to make you connect with the characters. Loved this book.
"Love that is too timid to ache isn't love at all."
"I don't believe people can become pure; however I believe that they can be purified - lifted from the soil when they find God finding them."
